George Walton
The small-sized settee, seating two people, was designed for Mrs George Davison, a cabinet-maker with the George Walton Company. It is inspired by the Sheraton tradition which it however refines, making its formal shape more elegant. It is marked by the presence and strength of the strained curves of the structural frame, clearly highlighting the upward dynamic thrusts from below. The sides and back open outwards, making more room in the upper part of the inside.
This dynamics is further accentuated by the pattern of the upholstery fabric which, in narrow ribbed velvet, highlights the signs of a similar tension.
The feet are part of the structure which encloses the sides and heightens the sense of opening outwards. Free of ornament, the whole effect depends on the elegance and dynamism of the shape.
Despite its apparent height, the settee expresses an extreme sense of lightness.
