| Structure in curved plywood, crystal tops, brushed brass joints. cm. 100 x 50 x h. 60 Carlo Mollino Hovering between the most daring engineering and uninhibited organicism, "Arabesque" is an innovative table designed by Mollino in various versions over several decades. This version (probably designed for "Casa Orengo", Turin, 1949) deals with the linguistic/construction theorem. A sheet of appropriately curved plywood supports two glass levels – designed in sinuous shapes, at times starting from naturalistic echoes, at others from feminine profiles, or again recalling classical or modern works of art – which work together (in traction) to support the system, preventing it from widening under strain. Hinting at techno-construction science, the lightening holes in the plywood are also in a curved line to prevent cracking at break points, while floor contact occurs in only three places, "describing a single plane in space", just as each of the glass levels are fixed to the structure at only three points. |
