Gio Ponti

Those were the years when his home was in Via Dezza, Milan, a sunny place where Ponti was to live for the rest of his life, a construction emblematic of his way of conceiving interior design.
And this self-lighting bookcase – with four drawers as its base, a bar/cabinet in the central part, shelves/bookshelves in the upper part and neon lights placed between the upper back, the bar and the shelves -, clearly gives an idea of the last quarter century of his work, spent in studying a more luminous, recherché lightness enhanced in the relations of figure/background, negative/positive, empty/full areas and light/shadow, distilled in tapered, slimmed, always lightened forms. They were made even livelier by the contrast between materials and finishes, like between the oak and ivory-coloured lacquer in this furniture object, which straining towards space (with the drawers which seem to push forward), at the same time seems able to welcome the user in its upper wings, ideally embracing him.
