J. Van Mekeren

Composed of a large stand resting on four supports joined in a table, the cabinet is distinguished by the wealth and variety of its inlay, enhanced by the simplicity of the overall geometric volume. It is also made harmonious by the marked horizontal movement of the base and top bands of the cabinet and by the transverse front with a long drawer.
The original in the Victoria and Albert Museum is similar to items in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and at Amerongen Castle near Utrecht, which also contains tables and candelabra supports in the same design.
On the large front doors, framed by a motif of plumed veneering, appear vases of flowers, resting on tables seen in perspective and small birds, with vases seen from the side inside ovoli.
The floral motif is continuous, apart from along the horizontal bands, also on the vertical central element of the doorstop, where the lock is concealed, on the support legs and on the flat, undulating cross link.
The inside has no vertical sub divisions, but connecting levels with a double row of low drawers and is lined more simply with a framing star motif on the doors.
The flowers are drawn with extreme naturalistic precision and are in natural or stained wood, with hot-work shading which emphasises the appearance of depth.
The reconstruction was based on the graphic processing of photographs of the original, from which transparencies were also obtained necessary for the perforation of the single fragments of the inlay.
